Petrol Filling Station – Timber Kiosk

SITUATION / PROBLEM › › In accordance with our 20 x 20 environmental commitments, we wished to explore opportunities to reduce the environmental impact of our petrol filling station (PFS) structures. › › Given the degree of regulation that surrounds petrol station construction, we knew that any size- able step change would test existing regulatory boundaries. WORK UNDERTAKEN / COLLABORATION › › During 2012/3, Lynx Forecourt Ltd (petrol station main contractor) was invited to join our SRM programme. › › As part of our joint SRM development plan, Lynx organised an ‘innovation day’ whereby PFS suppliers had the opportunity to present 20 x 20 initiatives to a cross-functional Sainsbury’s team. The team comprised of procurement, store devel- opment group, value management and petrol, in addition to our external cost consultant and architect. RESULTS DELIVERED › › The first 20 x 20 initiative delivered from these sessions was supported by KLH Architects Ltd. Managed by Lynx, Martindale’s KLH produced and installed the UK’s first fully timber petrol station at Sainsbury’s Crystal Palace store. › › The new PFS structure at Crystal Palace contains 6000kg of stored carbon, and represents 20 tonnes of CO2 removed from the previous construction materials and methods.

“Being invited to be part of Sainsbury’s SRM process allowed us as a business to work collaboratively with the different teams within Sainsbury’s, utilising exper- tise across the board. SRM has been mutually beneficial to both us and Sains- bury’s – we have shared ideas and opportunities and have been able to develop a new sustainable PFS kiosk at commercially viable rates. The 20 x 20 sustainability principles have been at the forefront of every conversation, and SRM has provided us with the platform to be able to debate, visualise, create and deliver the end solution. When you deliver environmental innovation like this, all parties can share in the positive impact of the change and success.” – CLIVE GASSON, COMMERCIAL DIRECTOR, LYNX FORECOURT LTD.
