COMMITMENT TO TRAINING

Figure 4.13. Plans to carry out specific SRM related training in the next 12 months – all respondents

29% DON’T KNOW

Given the need and rather than wait another 12 months to discover if the situation regarding investment in training will turn around, we added a question to this year’s survey. This was to establish whether or not companies were recognising the relationship between SRM results and training, and if so were making a commitment to develop their people and skills over the next 12 months. Disappointingly it appears not. Only 51% of companies indicated they were planning to carry out any SRM specific training in the next 12 months. Amongst leaders, fast followers and followers, the figure was higher but not at a level that will change the picture appreciably.

○ 1 NOT EFFECTIVE

Against a backdrop of high workloads and busy schedules, where training does take place it needs to be effective and efficient. In an effort to identify the learning preferences of companies, we asked respondents to rate different modes of learning in terms of their effectiveness to develop the skills required for SRM. Overall, respondents showed a clear preference for a coaching approach followed by instructor-led training. This indicates the important role that human interaction and sharing experience has in learning the skills required to deliver effective SRM.
