Senior stakeholder engagement and senior management support is regularly reported as one of the areas of SRM that is making the most progress. This might be the case but there are also indicators that stake- holder engagement is still a challenge. For the purposes of analysis we have identi- fied three stakeholder groups with whom engagement is vital to the success of SRM. The first group are internal senior manage- ment and executive stakeholders typically at head of function or business unit level. Figure 2.0 opposite (top) shows a clear differ- ence between the level of senior stakeholder engagement and support achieved by leaders versus that of followers. Leaders are over three times more likely to have senior management and executive stakeholders fully engaged. The second group of stakeholderswe consider are internal business and operational stake- holders, shown in the middle chart. These are typically at manager and senior manager level, involved in or impacted by SRM activity. Here we can see evidence that overall level of engagement is low, with only around 12% of respondents having full engagement and 44% moderately engaged. The final group, shown in the lower chart; key suppliers are perhaps not always regarded as stakeholders and effective engagement can be overlooked. This ques- tion referred to key suppliers that would normally be regarded as being in the first or second tier of a segmented supplier base. Of these, less than 50% of respondents believe them to have been fully engaged.
