IS CSER STILL ON THE BUSINESS AGENDA?

Given the persistent headlines on the financial crisis over the last few years, you could be forgiven for thinking that corporate social and environmental responsibility (CSER) had silently slipped off the business agenda.

SRM and CSER come together with the realisation that more than ever, much of an organisation’s CSER risk is related to the supply chain and so too, many of its opportunities. The impact and risk related to supply chain CSER is highlighted across a range of sectors by recent high profile incidents such as the Bangladeshi garment factory collapse, the Europe wide horsemeat food contamination scandal and continued problems in the financial services sector, some of which relate to key supplier relationships.

In fact, quite the opposite was true for companies that were looking to manage and grow their way out of the crisis. These organisations realised that more than ever, protecting and enhancing their reputation would be key to success. While many people thought the financial downturn would result in organisations switching to survival mode and becoming far more tactical in their approach, we have seen the opposite. Our research reveals that progress and investment in long term strategic initiatives has largely been maintained. Amongst these are supplier relationship manage- ment (SRM) and CSER.
