STATEOF FLUXOPINION: While it’s encouraging that

businesses see SRM as distinct set of skills, they will only achieve their desired performance if they put more effort and resources into developing those skills. To do that, they should gain a better understanding of the skills most important to optimise SRM, to what extent their SRM practitioners possess them, and provide training that will enable SRM outcomes to be delivered. Performance and results will fall short if they do not. INTHENEXT SECTION... In the next section we address the long standing underinvestment in technology that is increasingly recognised as one of the key elements missing from an effective approach to SRM.

SNAPSHOTANALYSIS: A training investment described as ‘Not much’ or ‘None at all’ does not sound like an appropriate investment in roles that can be critical to future business success, but that’s what themajority of businesses are investing in SRM training. When supplier innovation can boost growth and slash costs, businesses should consider investingmore in the people who will make it happen.

TRAINING INVESTMENT Investment in training was lower in 2016 than when we started our research. In 2009, 53% of respondents said investment in SRM related training was moderate or more. By 2016, that figure had fallen to 37%. But the picture across the leader and follower groups is clear. They invest more in training and benefit more from SRM.

COMMITMENTTOTRAINING Disappointingly, companies are failing to recognise the relationship between SRM results and a commitment to develop their people and skills over the next 12 months. While 87% of companies indicate that they believe SRM will become more important over the next 12 months, only 56% of indicate they are planning to carry out any SRM specific training in the same period. Businesses need to back up their commitment to SRM with a more serious consideration of skills, development and training. If not, they risk falling behind competitors who take supplier relationships more seriously.
