Organisations can learn from these barriers and perceived lack of progress, and work out the connections in order to break the cycle. This may well start with defining the SRM value proposition and creating the business case that unlocks the funding required to remove barriers.

The relationship between areas making the least progress and the barriers is not always clear cut. The apparent lack of progress being reported can often be the symptom of a barrier elsewhere and vice versa. For example, a lack of investment in training will have a clear link to the shortage of people with the requisite skills and competencies. The second most widely reported barrier is a lack of budget and resource, which will of course be a reason why the investment in training is making little progress. Similarly, the area making the least progress – the functionality and use of IT systems – could also be a symptom of the lack of budget barrier.

In contrast with 2013, a lack of active support from suppliers is no longer seen as a significant barrier. This year, only 8% of respondents are mentioning lack of supplier support as a barrier, compared with 13% in 2013.
